While breast augmentations continue being the leading breast enhancement surgery on the market, not all women seeking breast enhancement care to add volume to their chests. If you fall into this category, there’s a good chance you’ve wondered if a breast lift or breast reduction is the right option for you. While both procedures have several things in common, there are many differences that divide the two.

Breast Reduction

The main goal of breast reduction surgery is implied within the name, to instantly and effectively reduce breast size by removing excess breast tissue. The procedure consists of the removal of excess skin, fat, and glandular tissue to reduce breast size, as well as the lifting of the breasts and reducing the size of the areolas. If you are still considering if a breast reduction is your best route, consider if any of these factors affect you:

  • You’re uncomfortable with your too large breast size
  • Your breasts limit physical activity
  • Your large breasts cause you neck, shoulder, and back pain
  • There is always irritation underneath your breasts’ crease

Breast Lift

A breast lift procedure serves to lift the breasts for a more youthful breast profile, with minimal reduction of the overall size of the breasts. During this procedure, a surgeon will remove excess skin and tighten surrounding tissue, resulting in breasts that are firmer, perkier, and higher on the chest. Similar to a breast reduction, a breast lift procedure can still reduce areola size, with typically minimal removal of breast volume. There are several factors to determine if a breast lift is right for you, consider them below:

  • Your areolas or nipples point downward
  • Your nipples drop lower than your breast crease when you’re not wearing a bra
  • Your breasts seem flatter or have an elongated shape
  • One breast droops lower than the other

Common Advantages

Although different procedures with different goals, there are positive similarities between breast reductions and breast lifts. Both procedures are relatively easy and safe to undergo and typically result in a successful outcome, as the vast majority of these patients report a high degree of satisfaction with their results. Both groups of women experience better posture, feel lighter, and are happier with their figure and increased confidence. Scars from either procedure are typically easy to hide, even in more revealing clothing. Although every case is individual, many women can often breastfeed after recovering from breast reduction or breast lift surgery.

Both breast lifts and breast reductions can improve the look of your breasts and your self-confidence, but each of them serves a different purpose.
