Breast Lift in Fort Lauderdale, FL
Is Breast Lift Surgery Right For Me?
Did you know that you can improve your breasts without implants? Breast lift surgery by Dr. David J. Levens, a board-certified plastic surgeon, improves breasts that hang low and point downward — without implants! By tightening the skin around the breasts and reshaping the underlying breast tissue itself, Dr. Levens has helped hundreds of women in Fort Lauderdale and Broward County transform their natural breasts into a perkier shape and size.
What Can a Breast Lift Do?
A breast lift (mastopexy) can dramatically improve the appearance of breasts which are sagging or droopy due to aging, childbirth or simply their natural positioning on the chest. For women who desire greater breast fullness as well as breast repositioning, a breast augmentation surgery can be performed at the same time as the lift.
How Does a Breast Lift Work?
A breast lift can help restore a more lifted, youthful contour to the breasts by removing excess skin, reshaping the breast tissue, and repositioning the nipple-areola complex to a higher position. This is done using a combination of surgical techniques. Incisions will be made in the breasts based on the severity of sagging in the breasts, as well as the patient’s cosmetic goals and preferences. Then, the removal of excess skin and tissue will produce a youthful, more lifted appearance in the breasts. The nipples can also be resized or repositioned if necessary.
What are the Benefits of a Breast Lift?
One of the most desired benefits of breast lift surgery is the ability to improve the breasts without implants. Additional benefits of breast lift surgery include:
- More youthful, elevated breast position
- Correction of breast sagging (ptosis)
- Better body balance and proportion

What is Breast Lift Surgery Like?
What Happens During Breast Lift Surgery?
Breast lift surgery removes some of the skin, tissue and fat in the breasts to reposition the breast mound upward, while also repositioning the nipple and areola upward on the newly shaped breast. This typically involves incisions across the bottom of the breast crease, known as inframammary incisions, as well as incisions made around the nipple, known as periareolar incisions. The full extent and location of the incisions depend on the size, shape and droopiness of your breasts. Prior to performing the surgery, Dr. Levens will mark your breasts while you are in a seated position, as a guide during the operation. Prior to closing surgery, he will again put you in a seated position so he can carefully compare your breasts to assure as much symmetry as possible. All incisions will be carefully closed with sutures placed beneath the skin.
What are the Risks of Breast Lift Surgery?
There are a few important risks to consider before pursuing breast lift surgery.
Breast Symmetry Risks
There are always slight differences in size, shape and/or nipple location between your two breasts. A breast lift can reduce these differences but not entirely eliminate them.
Nipple Sensation Risks
When repositioning the nipple upward onto the new breast mound, the nipple is left attached to a piece of tissue within the breast to attempt to fully preserve the blood and nerve supply. In this way, every effort is made so that you will maintain a normal sensation after breast lift surgery. Although some degree of numbness is expected early after surgery, it is rare to have any permanent loss.
Surgical Risks
In a small percentage of cases, risks common to all surgical procedures can occur, such as bleeding, infection, and scar tissue formation. Dr. Levens will give you detailed information about these and other rare risks during his discussion with you and in written information about a breast lift.
What is Breast Lift Recovery Like?
What to Buy for Breast Lift Recovery?
When preparing for breast lift surgery and the recovery period, it's essential to have certain items on hand to ensure a smooth and comfortable healing process. Some of the items you may want to consider having available include:
- Surgical bras
- Comfortable clothing
- Extra pillows
- Ice packs
- Medications
- Scar care products
- Loose and supportive undergarments
- Entertainment and self-care items
How Painful is Breast Lift Surgery?
After your breast lift procedure, your discomfort will likely be minimal, but you may experience a sensation of tightness or fullness. This will improve rapidly in a few days. For moderate soreness, Dr. Levens will prescribe medication. Most patients require medication for only a few days. Your breasts may feel tight for 1-2 weeks, which will gradually resolve over the first few weeks as initial swelling reduces.
How Long is Breast Lift Recovery?
Breast lift is done on an outpatient basis, with most patients making a full recovery within three months. The typical schedule of recovery is:
- You’ll be able to shower in a few days.
- Bruising and swelling for 10 to 14 days.
- Return to work and social activities within 5 to 7 days.
- Partake in aerobic or strenuous activities within 3 to 4 weeks.
Dr. Levens will encourage you to return to normal activity as soon as you can, but for about 3-4 weeks, you should avoid strenuous activity that may increase your blood pressure potentially leading to bleeding or prolonged swelling. Keep in mind that while you might recover within a few months, it can take several months longer for swelling to fully resolve and reveal the final results of breast lift surgery.
Post Surgery Frequently Asked Questions
When Can I Sleep on My Side After Breast Lift?
Patients are advised to sleep on their back and/or in an elevated position for the first few weeks following breast lift surgery. This is done to minimize pressure on the incisions, promote proper healing, and reduce the risk of complications. Sleeping on your side too soon could potentially put pressure on the surgical area, disrupt the healing process, and cause discomfort. You may resume sleeping on your side after the initial healing phase, which is typically about 4-8 weeks after surgery, although the exact timeline will be different for each patient.
When Can I Wear a Regular Bra After My Breast Lift?
After surgery, you will wear a support bra for two to three weeks, only removing it for brief periods to maintain hygiene. As your healing progresses, most patients are able to transition to a regular bra. During this time, we recommend using a supportive sports bra or a soft, non-underwire bra.
Are the Results from a Breast Lift Permanent?
The results of breast lift surgery are long-lasting, but it's important to understand that the breasts will continue to age and undergo natural changes over time. While the effects of a breast lift are not permanent in the sense that they will halt the natural aging process, the procedure can provide significant and lasting improvements in breast shape and position. Factors such as aging, gravity, weight fluctuations, pregnancy, and breastfeeding can still impact the breasts after a breast lift.
