Gynecomastia (Male Breast Reduction) near Fort Lauderdale, FLMen suffer from the same self-confidence issues that women do. They look in the mirror and wish for a fuller head of hair or maybe a smaller waistline. Enlarged male breasts, or gynecomastia, is one such condition that may be embarrassing and can contribute to a lower self-image in men. There are many misconceptions about this common condition and how surgery can play a corrective role. It’s important for men considering male breast reduction to be fully informed on this procedure before electing to go under the knife, so here are five important facts to consider.

  1. Male Breast Reduction Corrects Gynecomastia

Male breast reduction is the most effective treatment for a condition known as gynecomastia. Gynecomastia, which results in enlarged or over-developed breasts in men, can be caused by hormone changes, genetics, rapid weight gain, or weight loss. While men of all shapes and sizes can be affected by gynecomastia and wish to alter the effects with a breast reduction, it is important to note that this procedure is not intended for those who wish to substitute a healthy lifestyle for surgical weight loss. This procedure is designed to help those who cannot lose their excess fat and skin from gynecomastia with only diet and exercise.

  1. Candidacy for Male Breast Reduction

You may be a good candidate for male breast surgery if:

  • Your condition can’t be corrected through alternative medical treatments
  • You are of normal weight and physically healthy
  • Your large breast size makes you uncomfortable
  • Your breast development is stabilized (usually over age 18)
  • You don’t smoke or use drugs
  1. What the Surgery Entails

During your breast reduction surgery, a surgeon will remove any excess fat and glandular tissue from the chest to shape it into a flatter, firmer, and more muscular area. Incisions will be made around the armpit, areola, or outer rim of the nipple to allow the skin to be pulled and tightened while removing extra skin or glandular tissue using a technique called excision. In the most severe cases of gynecomastia with feminine-like breast droopiness, significant skin removal may be indicated. Fatty tissue can also be removed using liposuction, so your surgeon may opt for both excision and liposuction for the best results.

  1. Minimal Recovery

Recovery from your gynecomastia surgery is fairly minimal and can last anywhere from 5-10 days. During this period, you should be wearing bandages and support garments to assist in your healing. In addition, a small, thin tube may temporarily be placed under the skin to drain any excess blood or fluid. Some discomfort and tenderness in the chest region can be expected. These sensations will subside within a week or two, but some swelling and numbness can last for several months. Full activity can be resumed after four to six weeks.

  1. Lasting Results

The results of male breast reduction surgery are meant to be permanent. However, external factors can contribute to gynecomastia. Therefore, it is important to maintain a healthy lifestyle, be vigilant of the medications and supplements you take, and seek treatment for any medical condition that will cause gynecomastia to return.
