Unfortunately, not all of your fat cells respond to diet and exercise in the same way. As a result, you may notice that some parts of your body remain resistant to diet and exercise. Residents of Deerfield Beach, Florida, will be relieved to hear that there is hope. Our plastic surgery practice in Coral Springs offers liposuction to remove stubborn pockets of fat and make your body beach ready.
What is Liposuction?
Men and women who cannot lose those unattractive bulges through diet and exercise may benefit in from undergoing a liposuction procedure. Liposuction, also called lipoplasty can make a person’s weight appear more evenly distributed and produce a more streamlined appearance. After liposuction, close-fitting clothing will dramatically reveal a slim silhouette instead of bulges and love handles. People who have to buy over-sized clothing to camouflage large upper arms, hips, thighs, or buttocks will have an easier time finding flattering clothing after their treatment. During a liposuction procedure, tiny incisions are made in the targeted area. Small tubes called cannulas are inserted into the incisions and begin to suction fat from beneath the skin.
Many areas of the body are prone to deposits of localized fat. These include:
- Upper arms
- Neck
- Abdomen
- Flanks (otherwise known as love handles)
- Thighs
- Hips (otherwise known as saddlebags)
- Buttocks
- Knees
- Ankles
- Calves
Good Candidates for Liposuction
Many men and women with stubborn pockets of fat are good candidates for liposuction, but the best candidates are healthy people in a normal weight range. Skin elasticity is also an important factor when considering liposuction; the removal of excess fat often leaves excess skin loose. Those with poor skin elasticity will find it difficult to enjoy their results unless skin is removed. Skin generally loses a great deal of elasticity in patients between the ages of 45 to 50, though this can be affected by weight and genetics.
What Happens During Liposuction?
Before you undergo your liposuction procedure, Dr. Levens will mark the areas of your body you have chosen for fat removal. Incisions will be made in inconspicuous places on your body to mark the places where cannulas are inserted. The depth of the insertion will depend on the depth of your unwanted fat. The fat will be suctioned from your body in the area of the incision, and then the cannula will be transferred to other areas of the fat deposit. Small portions of fat will be removed until the bulge is contoured. Dr. Levens will monitor the area for desired thickness during the procedure.
Once Dr. Levens has completed suctioning fat from one side of your body, he will treat the opposite side in the same manner, making sure that each side is as symmetrical as possible. Lastly, each incision will be closed, and the area will be wrapped with elastic dressing in order to apply gentle pressure. This will prevent fluid accumulation in the treated area. You will be able to shower within a week, and your incisions will result in minimal scarring.
