Photo Focus: Liposuction
and Tummy Tuck

Healthy men and women who are at or within 20 pounds of their ideal weight but can’t seem to lose bulges of fat in specific areas are good candidates for liposuction.

In this procedure, small suction tubes (cannulas) are inserted through tiny incisions to remove excess fat deposits from neck, upper arms, upper or lower abdomen, flank areas (love handles), back, inner or outer thighs, hips (saddlebags), buttocks, knees, calves, and ankles.

The entire bulging area is treated, removing small amounts of fat at a time, and constantly checking fat thickness and contour. A thin layer of normal fat is left beneath the skin to prevent rippling or dimpling. Incisions are closed with tiny sutures leaving small scars in concealed areas when possible.

Sometimes, liposuction is combined with other surgeries such as tummy tucks, breast surgeries and even facelifts. In those cases, the primary surgery is done to tighten muscles and remove excess skin, while the liposuction can be done simultaneously to slim and re-contour adjacent areas such as the trunk (during abdominoplasty) and the neck (at the time of facelift).

Top: This patient had excess belly fat but good abdominal muscle tone and no excess skin. Liposuction of the abdomen produced a slimmer,
flatter profile. Bottom: This post-pregnancy patient had a tummy tuck to tighten abdominal muscles and remove excess skin. Liposuction was also done to re-contour the back and sides of her trunk.

Inside Stories ...

Editor’s note:
Due to privacy concerns, patients’ names are not used.

K.L., Coral Springs: “After nursing three children, my cup size dropped from a C to an A. I’m only 33 and wasn’t happy with the prospect of having very small, droopy breasts for the rest of my life. Dr. Levens did an augmentation and lift which have made me look and feel like my younger self. I had no pain and no second thoughts. I’m extremely happy with my completely natural look and have already referred three friends to Dr. Levens.”

E.J., Parkland: “At 44, I decided I didn’t want to go into another swimsuit season with a figure that had all the telltale signs of childbearing. My belly sagged and my breasts were a cup size smaller than when I was younger.

Two people referred me to Dr. Levens. He performed a
tummy tuck and a breast augmentation which returned me to my original C cup. He achieved exactly what I asked for. I’d do it again in a heartbeat. And I just bought a really great swimsuit.”

B.C., Boca Raton: “In 1993, my husband severed two fingers in a boating accident. Three different plastic surgeons in the emergency room wouldn’t reattach them because they said they wouldn’t heal and would be useless. A nurse whispered to me to call a young surgeon named David Levens. He reattached the fingers so well you can’t see evidence of the accident, and they work perfectly. My husband is a mechanic and this was his right hand. Dr. Levens gave him his life back.

So when I needed a breast implant replacement in 1995, I went to Dr. Levens and have since returned for liposuction and eyelid surgery. He’s the best.”

K.L., Coral Springs: “When I told people I was going to have my upper and lower eyelids done, everyone said I didn’t need it. But I’m 48 and I was tired of looking tired all the time and having problems applying eye makeup. After the surgery, the same people who said I didn’t need it said,“Wow, I guess you did, because your eyes look fabulous.” I love looking rested and applying make-up is a breeze now.”
